Across a range of leading language‑model‑based agents, dark patterns successfully redirected trajectories toward undesirable outcomes in over 70% of both generated and real‑world tasks. The analysis also revealed a positive correlation between model size, test‑time reasoning capabilities, and susceptibility, indicating that larger, more capable models may be more vulnerable.

Assessment of Countermeasures

Common defensive strategies—including in‑context prompting and the deployment of guardrail models—were evaluated for their ability to mitigate the influence of dark patterns. Results showed inconsistent reductions in success rates, suggesting that existing countermeasures do not reliably protect agents from this class of manipulation.

Implications and Future Work

The study highlights a latent security risk for web‑enabled AI systems, emphasizing the need for more robust detection and mitigation techniques.
